The Academy of Dutch Soccer (A.D.S.) believes that the coaches, players and parents should be informed as to what type of team formation is preferred on the soccer field while being trained and/or coached by ADS. It is best to understand what our philosophy and team formation is before you hire us to train your team. Our philosophy is explained in the Philosophy section and below we will explain about the team formation that we use while coaching and training your children. If, after reviewing the team formations that we use for certain age groups, you would like to hire us for team coaching and training please review “How You Can Hire Us - Team Training” below so you are aware of the available packages and what is needed to make our partnership work.

**Please note: the Academy of Dutch Soccer does not provide soccer training fields - field location, availability and charges must be arranged by your team representative independent of our training / coaching agreement.

Team formation

U6 – U12:

In this age group, the players are focused on getting to know the soccer ball and getting control over it. As the soccer ball moves from side to side on the soccer field it is important to teach the players the basic positions of the game. The basic positions are goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward. Each player should get to know each position during these years to experience the basics of what is required to play each position.

During these years some players will develop the ability for a certain position, either based on their natural talent or through the team trainings. Others will develop their talent for a certain position in the years to come. From the Academy of Dutch Soccer perspective we like to rotate the players as often as possible during the games played through out the season. When a team gets to the U8 and U9 age level, the teams will play in the 1-1-3-1 or 1-2-1-2 formation (6vs6); 1-2-1-2-1 formation (7vs7); or 1-2-3-2 or 1-3-1-3 formation (8vs8) and the game is played based on the strength of their attacking abilities and teaching the diamond formation. The players themselves are now able to understand the basics of what they need to do when they are playing at one of these positions. We believe that the soccer season is part of the development of the players during these ages and therefore we believe that it doesn’t matter whether a team wins or loses games at these ages. More important to us is that the players are trying out the new soccer skills they have learned during these soccer games and have FUN and support from their family while being on the soccer field. The Academy of Dutch Soccer develops players at these ages for the future, not the present.

U13 – U16:

The Dutch Soccer Philosophy, which we prefer at the Academy of Dutch Soccer, is to play in the 1-4-3-3 formation (11vs11). Starting in this formation, there is the ability to change to a more offensive or defensive formation when a different approach is needed due to the events of the game.

formation

If the A.D.S. coach thinks that a team is not ready to play this formation, based on the overall skills of a team, we recommend the 1-4-4-2 formation (11vs11) with the intention that the moment the players are master over the soccer ball they will play the 1-4-3-3 formation.

At A.D.S. we believe that during the ages of U10 through U16 the players are still developing their technical skills and the ability to play under pressure. During these ages:

  • The soccer field becomes bigger.
  • The game speeds up.
  • Conditioning and player speed become important factors during the game.
  • New rules become part of the game.
  • The players are growing physically.
  • Their growing personality has influence on their game play.

Therefore we start asking our players to think about their game play and how they use their technical skills and team tactics on and off the field. During these years, we also request that the players learn the theory of the game - both during the training sessions as well as, before, during, and after the soccer game. This will help them quickly understand the game rules, along with developing their understanding of the support of each other on and off the field as a team. We hope that the parents understand that the theory is part of the development of the player and the positive effects will be seen in future games and seasons. The Academy of Dutch Soccer always focuses on the future of the player; so they can play games at a high level or at the level that they feel comfortable. Players will also understand the spirit of the game of soccer when they reach the age of 18 and above.

In this age range, teams begin to see the benefit of A.D.S. trainings and understanding the theory of soccer as their performance improves on the field. At this point, the focus on winning soccer games is an important part of the coaching strategy by requiring the player to use the techniques and knowledge taught by the Academy of Dutch Soccer.
